New Preparations

Photo: Sharon Hobbs, ©Michael Keating During the October Board meeting many motions were passed. You can read them in the minutes on the AVVA website. I would like to mention two of those motions now.

First, the Board approved the launch of a new program called Spousal & Survivors VA Benefits. On the website you will find complete instructions, handouts, and strategies for conducting an educational seminar in your area.

The second motion: The Board approved a permanent reduction in AVVA life membership dues for VVA members. VVA members may now join AVVA for $50 lifetime. Keep in mind that they remain supporting members with no vote; changing the no-vote status would require a bylaw change. New membership applications with the correct payment dues will be available soon.

AVVA has several undertakings coming in January: National candidate declarations, national delegate registrations, bylaw proposals, annual awards nominations, and the search for our next Project Friendship. Did I mention that 2019 also is our 20th anniversary? More on that later.

The AVVA Elections Committee will begin accepting candidates for national offices. Elections will take place during the National Convention in Spokane. The rules, qualifications, and job duties of all offices can be found in our Policies and Procedures Manual, Section I.

The committee also will be accepting delegate registrations. Each Convention delegate must register with the Elections Committee and with the Convention. Be sure to note the mailing address for each form. They are different. Do not send the Delegate Registration form to the National Office.

During the National Convention, the AVVA delegates will be voting on changes to our bylaws. The deadline will be announced on the website. Do not procrastinate; the Bylaws Committee will not accept any proposed amendments after the deadline.

The national search for recipients of the 2019 Member of the Year, the Fellowship, and the Cathy Keister Spirit of Excellence awards also begins in January. Do you know that someone who gives his or her time and energies to AVVA and to veterans unselfishly? Take the time to nominate that person.

Each year during the national meeting, AVVA chooses a local non-profit organization to be our Project Friendship. We will begin our search early in 2019. The last four years have been record-breakers. With everyone helping a little, we can set another record in 2019.

Be sure to visit our website in January for all the forms and details of our activities. Please pay very close attention to deadline dates.

On behalf of the AVVA National Board of Directors, I wish everyone safe and happy holidays.
