Unheralded Hero

As we approach the 50th anniversary of my Vietnam experience, I continue to search for an African-American Army sergeant who was wounded but whom I cannot identify. He was with the 3rd Platoon, Co. D., 4/47 Inf. Bn., 9th Inf. Div. Within the first twenty seconds of an ambush, Armor Troop Carrier 112-11 took three rockets in the well deck, incapacitating a full platoon. The sergeant climbed from the well deck up into a .50 caliber machine-gun mount that had been abandoned. A few moments after he got into the mount, a B-40 rocket burned through one-inch armor, and the sergeant was severely wounded.

Two rockets struck the boat. The first tore the bar armor aside. The second burned through, spraying me and the radioman with shrapnel. I was medevaced that day.

Some say the sergeant was wounded but lived and received the Silver Star. Others say he died. Cpl. Hector Lugo-Mojica from Toa Baja, Puerto Rico, E Co., 4 /47th Inf. was KIA on our boat that afternoon. The African-American trooper was a hero, and I’m quite certain that in the chaos of the ambush, nobody else knew what he did. I was Navy; I drove the boat we were on.

Forty-five years have passed since that Sunday afternoon. This evening I sit in my meadow and reflect on the years I’ve been given. Evening rays pierce gray clouds as dry west winds rattle red canary seed heads. In the distance two eagles spiral on thermals high above an Angus carcass decomposing in the neighbor’s pasture. And again I wonder why I am here when men a few feet away were maimed or killed. It was just another monotonous operation, traveling up another narrow river, searching for the elusive Viet Cong.
