Attending To Business

The National Board met in Silver Spring in November and began planning for AVVA’s 2023 National Convention in Orlando. Decisions on deadlines for the submission of bylaws amendments, national award recipients, candidate declaration, and delegate registration were made. All criteria and important information about these deadlines will be posted on www.avva.org no later than January.

While in Silver Spring, Board members attended the dedication of the Missing Man window display, the new Tom Corey Conference Room, and the rededication of the George C. Duggins Conference Room in the VVA National Office. On Thursday morning, the AVVA Board took part in a budget workshop. The presenter was National Finance Chair Susan Price.

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the dedication of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. I had the honor of attending the official ceremony on Veterans Day, along with most of the AVVA National Board. This year, VVA National Secretary Bill Meeks and I shared the distinction of laying the wreath at The Wall during the ceremony; while there, I also laid a wreath at the In Memory Plaque.

It is not too early to think about next year’s national award nominees. Do you know someone who is worthy of national recognition? A member who is always volunteering time and energies to veterans or their community? Please nominate that person for 2023 recognition, whether it’s Member of the Year, the Fellowship Award, or the Cathy Keister Spirit of Excellence a Award. All recipients will be honored during the AVVA Awards Luncheon. and the winners do not have to be present to win. VISTA volunteer frontrunners will also be recognized for their service at the same event.

The AVVA Board of Directors sends our love, sympathies, and prayers to the Nancy Switzer family in the loss of Nancy’s husband, Rick. May he Rest in Peace.
