Future Expectations

During its January meeting, the VVA Board of Directors approved a motion charging us with forming a committee of VVA and AVVA members to explore the possibility of consolidating the two organizations.

The committee consists of five VVA Board members and five AVVA Board members and is co-chaired by me and Charlie Montgomery. The other members are VVA Directors-at-Large Liz Cannon, Charlie Stapleton, and Sandie Wilson; VVA Region Director John Margowski; AVVA Vice President Kathy Andras; and AVVA Region Directors Tony Gigli, Bobbie Morris, and Terri Rangel. Our advisors are VVA Parliamentarian Michael Swift and VVA Constitution Committee Chair Leslie DeLong. Our scribe is AVVA Secretary Nina Schloffel.

This group of hard-working people has been diligently gathering information, researching options, discussing possibilities, and agreeing upon preferences. We hope to have a report ready to present at the April Board meeting. However, because the motion called for the committee only to investigate, I expect our report to be somewhat limited, and we will need more time and effort in the future.

AVVA has three distinct awards of recognition each year designed to acknowledge the work and dedication of individual members. Nominations will be accepted until May 30. Details and nomination forms are on the AVVA website. All recipients will be announced during the AVVA Awards Luncheon in Jacksonville, and the winners do not have to be present to win. At that same event, VISTA volunteer frontrunners will also be announced and recognized for their service.

By the time you read this, our Project Friendship recipient will be chosen for this year. A formal announcement will be made during the April Board meeting. We will notify our members through our online communications platform. Our collected contributions will be given to the recipient at the closing of the Leadership Conference.

We are now in our second printing of the Flag Etiquette booklet. We should have a fresh supply by mid-March. Paper Safes are in stock; order forms for both are on the AVVA website (www.avva.org). Survivor Benefits brochures may be ordered by calling the national office.
