40 YEARS OF ARTS OF WAR

This issue marks the 40th anniversary of Arts Editor Marc Leepson’s Arts of War column, which first appeared in the March 1986 issue. Up to that point, The Veteran occasionally ran reviews of books, movies, TV shows, and stage plays that dealt with the Vietnam War and Vietnam War veterans. Then-editor Jeff Stein asked Marc, who had been contributing book reviews since October 1985, to write a monthly column with reviews and news about artistic endeavors dealing with the war and its veterans.

“At first, I didn’t think there would be material to fill a column every month,” Marc said. “But that never proved to be a problem. In fact, by 2010 there were so many new books to review that we started Books in Review as a separate column in the magazine.”

Books in Review has run in every issue since then. Arts of War moved online in 2008, although film and TV reviews occasionally appear in the print edition. We created the online Books in Review II column in 2011 mainly because of the explosion of self-published books.

Since 2010, we have posted more than 800 Arts of War reviews and news about movies, TV shows, stage plays, musicals, music, dance, and more. This March, we posted our 2,000th book review on BiR II. A slew of talented writers — including the late David Willson, Hank Zeybel, Bill McCloud, Bob Wartman, Harvey Weiner, and Dan Hart — contribute to Books in Review II, which Marc Leepson edits.
