Richard DeLong, a life member of Chapter 141 in Lafayette, Louisiana, received the VVA Commendation Medal, the organization’s highest honor, from VVA National President John Rowan on April 11.

The Highest Award

The VVA Commendation Medal, the organization’s highest award, recognizes members for outstanding, exemplary service to veterans and the community. Recommendation by a chapter president, state council president, or an executive board is submitted to the Public Affairs Committee. In consultation with VVA’s national president, the committee may authorize the award of the medal.

The application form can be found on the VVA website. It must be accompanied by a detailed narrative that describes the merits and accomplishments of the candidate. The Commendation Medal is presented as the need becomes evident; its presentation is not tied to any particular event. Therefore, submissions can be made at any time.
