VVA’s Financial Position Still Firmly on Solid Ground

I have had the pleasure to serve as your National Treasurer for seven terms, beginning in 2001 and continuing after my recovery from Acute Myeloid Leukemia caused by exposure to Agent Orange.

We have experienced many challenges and changes during my tenure. I served with three National Presidents: Tom Corey, John Rowan, and Jack McManus. VVA faced revenue increases, we reduced the Life Memberships to $50, and, after the Dues Rebate funds were depleted, we initiated a plan to fund revenue from the operating budget.

I have enjoyed working with my colleagues and facing these problems head on, and I have enjoyed every moment as your Treasurer.

As I had fulfilled my obligations as Treasurer, I offered myself as a candidate for President at the Convention. However, the delegates chose Tom Burke for that role, and I will support him as he assumes that difficult task.

Dottie Barickman has worked with me during my years as Treasurer, and she is an excellent choice as the new VVA National Treasurer. Our Finance Department is professional and proficient, and all the VVA department directors have developed and executed a budget to provide benefits to all VVA members. The four National Officers have functioned as a collegial executive team to serve VVA. I have no doubt this will continue as Dottie Barrickman takes the reins.

I will still be very involved in VVA, as I have served as Alabama State Council President since 1998 and as a member of the Conference of State Council Presidents. My record of attendance at VVA is always a priority, and I look forward to seeing many of you soon.

God has blessed me and guides me daily, and I pray he protects each of you and Vietnam Veterans of America.
