Seeking anyone who served with my late cousin, 1st Lt. Robert Bruce Maddox, in Co. C, 2nd Bn. (Airmobile), 7th Cav.. He was a field artillery officer serving as a forward observer, and was directing aerial rocket artillery while engaged with a large enemy force in Bien Hoa on February 11, 1969, when he was killed by enemy small arms fire. Bob Webb is looking for an A-1 pilot who used the call sign Elgin 89 on June 30, 1965, during action near Cheo Reo, Phu Bon Province, II Corps. Red Marker FAC Capt. Paul Windle had been shot down and killed. The Vietnamese Airborne and their Red Hat advisors were surrounded in an ambush without an FAC. An A-1 came up on the Red Hat’s FM frequency, identified himself as Elgin 89, and asked if they would like him to act as an FAC until they got a replacement. Elgin 89 controlled strikes from USAF, VNAF, Navy, and Marine aircraft until the VC withdrew. Webb would like to thank Elgin 89. In July 1968 a chopper was attempting to take off from an LZ pad on Hill 54. It was loaded with troops, and the tail section became tangled in como wire.
