Chapter 1048 and the President’s VolunteerService Awards
Every year at its January membership meeting Daytona Beach, Florida, Chapter 1048 takes time to present President’s Volunteer Service Awards to its members. That’s “President” as in the President of the United States. These awards, which date from 2003, are given by the President’s Council on Service and Civic Participation to individuals throughout the nation whose volunteer service in their local communities has a positive impact and “inspires those around them to take action, too.”
There are Bronze, Silver, and Gold awards (based on hours of community service work), as well as the Call to Service Award, also known as the President’s Lifetime Achievement Award. At the January meeting Chapter President Bob Adkins presented Volunteer Service Awards to Diana and Terry Schaack, Rick and Sheila Minor, Wendell and Pam Hawes, Jim Drake, Richard Sawicki, Tony Caputo. Adkins and his wife Cathy also received awards.
Former Chapter President Rod Phillips received the Lifetime Achievement Award, bestowed to those who have performed 4,000 or more volunteer hours. Phillips was the first VVA Chapter 1048 member and is believed to be the first member of the VVA Florida State Council to receive this prestigious honor for his community service, advocacy, and dedication to veterans and veterans’ issues.
