Membership Notes, May/June 2017 Ocean City, Maryland, Chapter 1091 BY NELSON KELLY PFC Barry H. Berger was the only resident of Ocean City, Maryland, killed in the Vietnam War. After attending American University, he volunteered for the U.S. Army and became a Ranger. He was posthumously awarded the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, and Army Commendation Medal. On March 30 Ocean City, Maryland, Chapter 1091 held a memorial service for Barry Berger, which was attended by family members, chapter members, other veterans, members of Gold Star Mothers, as well as friends and schoolmates. A black granite memorial bench inscribed with “All Gave Some, Some Gave All” and a plaque honoring the city’s native son were dedicated during the ceremony. The Delmarva Choir sang and the American Legion provided an Honor Guard. The bench and plaque have been placed in front of City Hall, a building that was once the Ocean City Elementary School, which Berger attended. Another plaque in front of the building honors the six students from the school who died during World War II. After the service, attendees reverently touched the plaque and said, “Welcome home, Barry.”
